Amazon.com - Ordered 02.17.2000 - Shipped 03/09/2000 - Received 03/21/2000 This musical received the 1988 Richard Rodgers Production Award and the 1990 Helen Hayes Award for Best Musical. Musical Director: Jeffrey Saver, Original Off-Broadway Orchestrations: Michael Abbott, Additional Orchestrations: Jeffrey Saver and Stephen Flaherty The booklet contains a two thirds of a page text about the show and its authors, by Ira Weitzman, and a two pages and a third synopsis. The back cover holds 10 small B&W ID pictures of the cast members. I was very anxious before hearing at this recording, because it's from the authors of Once On This Island and I supposed I would be deceived. It is not exactly the case, because Lucky Stiff is a totally different musical and I don't think the two can be compared. Of course, Once On This Island remains my preferred by far, particularly the Original Broadway Cast, but this musical has its own qualities: the story is funny, the music and songs are entertaining. The performances are also very nice. My prefered songs are Dogs Versus You, The Phone Call and Speaking French. What I think is interesting in this musical is that it's much nearer from theatre than recent so called dramas and other tragic stories. Here the book is classic 'big comedy' theatre, with very funny situations, mixed together with a very good score and lyrics. The result is a very enjoyable musical, particularly when performed as on this recording.
