Amazon.com - Ordered 04/02/99 - Shipped 04/07/99 - Received 04/12/99 The booklet -- well, it's not a booklet but rather a book -- included in the hard paper box contains 9 big B&W pictures of authors and stage, and 8 medium B&W pictures of the performers. The book is very thick (171 pages), and contains the full libretto and notes/synopsis by Michael Steinberg in English, French and German. There is also a biography for each of the performers. A kind of booklet I would like many recordings to provide. Only color pictures are missing.
I am very happy I could get this recording. I had been willing to get it after having heard I Was Looking At The Ceiling And Then I Saw The Sky and I have not been deceived. Beware that this is much more an opera than I Was Looking..., that is the voices are opera-like while in the latter, the voices were Broadway Musical voices. The vocal score style is the same though, and I'd be interested in hearing a less opera rendition of this work.
This said, Adam's music is strange, intriguing and addictive. I love it. I think that it's maybe a little less hearable in this recording than in I Was Looking... (because the style here is less modern, the music is softer, fitting more a real opera), but it's still typical Adam's style.
One little flaw is that the recording level is somehow low.
My personal opinion on this recording is that it is excellent, but may not fit everyone's taste.
