Amazon.fr - Ordered 02.06.2001 - Shipped 02.27.2001 - Received 03.01.2001 The booklet contains two color pictures of the main performers, and the back of the jewel box holds a color picture from the video clip of the song that was used to advertise the show on TV: Terre. The inside of the jewel box holds a picture of what I think is the Louvre museum. There are nice background pictures, but nothing very thrilling. There are no introduction text, synopsis or whatever else, just the lyrics and credits. I was wondering what could be the quality of this recording, after having heard the very deceiving Les Mille Vies D'Ali Baba and knowing what sort of crap could be produced in France as Roméo Et Juliette for example. And I must say that today, after having heard all those French productions, I must admit that Notre Dame de Paris was not so bad after all. But this recording, while still a little deceiving at the first listening, because of the lack of consistency of the whole score and of the sometimes not necessary modern sounds, has some haunting melodies and after a number of listenings, I've come to appreciate it. Léa La Liberté, out of a name I hope she didn't choose, has a very pretty voice, and the male cast performs nicely, even if the vocal style is often a sort of soft pop with soft voices and effects, and not musical theatre (ie not specifically for amplification) singing style. Maybe it's a studio recording consequence. Another problem of most of those new French Musicals, the lack of a real Book. Maybe there is one, but this recording doesn't reflect it well, so it's more a collection of songs than a real cast recording. Another common problem is that French composers consider they can also write lyrics and finally the resulting lyrics are often very stupid and simple or too much 'made up'. Here this can be heard at times, and furthermore, even being French, the way the lyrics are laid over the music happens to make them hard to understand (words cut into two parts etc.). Nonetheless, of all the recent French musicals cast recordings I've heard, this one is the first that could really have led me to the theatre, because there is some very good potential and that strangely, I've been listening at it a little more than what I would have expected at the first listening.
